The University Alliance Ruhr combines concrete support with long-term cooperation in research, knowledge transfer, and teaching. A major shipment of scientific equipment has arrived in Ukraine.

As the war against Ukraine, and particularly in the Dnipro region, continues to intensify, the three universities of the University Alliance Ruhr are further expanding their cooperation with Ukrainian partner universities. Through the DniProNRW – Science Bridge project, funded by the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (MKW NRW), Ruhr University Bochum, TU Dortmund University, and the University of Duisburg-Essen are combining concrete support for scientific infrastructure with long-term cooperation in research, teaching, and knowledge transfer. The project is developed and coordinated by the Liaison Office for Eastern Europe/Central Asia/South Caucasus (EECA) of the University Alliance Ruhr.

Scientific Equipment for Dnipro
At the beginning of September 2026, a special shipment set out from the Ruhr region for Ukraine: laboratory equipment, scientific materials, and IT hardware were delivered to partner universities in the Dnipro region. The equipment was selected in close coordination with the Ukrainian partner universities to meet their specific needs and was then inspected and prepared for use in research and teaching.

The shipment was made possible through a major commitment across all three universities. Faculties as well as academic and technical staff identified equipment, inspected it, and prepared it for transfer. University administrative staff also made a significant contribution, handling tasks including coordination, accounting, documentation, and organizational arrangements. Students actively supported the process as well, helping to compile, pack, and prepare the equipment for transport. Accompanying training and train-the-trainer formats are intended to ensure that the equipment can be used sustainably by the partner institutions.

Three Strands Connecting Science and Reconstruction
The equipment shipment is just one element of a much broader approach. DniProNRW brings together three thematic strands, each led by one of the UA Ruhr universities: TU Dortmund University leads the knowledge transfer strand, the University of Duisburg-Essen leads the water research strand, and Ruhr University Bochum (Professor Björn Rothstein) leads the German Studies strand.

All three strands are guided by a common idea: cooperation should not wait until the war is over. Scientific structures, international networks, and joint projects can already help strengthen higher education institutions and create opportunities for the future.
