Reception of the 2026 Ruhr Fellows at the University of Duisburg-Essen.
Nine students from the U.S. are currently visiting the universities of the University Alliance Ruhr as Ruhr Fellows. The students are from Harvard, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Lafayette College, and Lehigh University. The nine U.S. students are majoring in engineering and environmental sciences.

Since early June, they have been Ruhr Fellows at the universities of Bochum, Dortmund, and Duisburg-Essen. The University Alliance Ruhr (UA Ruhr) program begins for them with a one-week orientation, including a visit to the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex and various cultural events. Afterward, they will complete a nine-week research internship in various departments at the UA Ruhr universities. For the first time, members of the Research Center Trustworthy Data Science and the Research Center One Health Ruhr are also serving as hosts for the interns. The fields in which the fellows will work with their hosts range from artificial intelligence in entrepreneurship to ecotoxicology and materials science, as well as technical chemistry and the synthesis of nanoparticles.

The fellowship offers them a comprehensive insight into academic, cultural, and professional life in the Ruhr region.

Petra Günther from the International Office at the University of Duisburg-Essen is delighted about the visit: “Welcoming international students is one of my favorite things to do. It really highlights what our work is all about: connecting students and researchers across borders.”

The Ruhr Fellowship Program is coordinated by the UA Ruhr Liaison Office for North America. An overview of the current cohort and their hosts is available here.
