28 international researchers are guests at the University Alliance Ruhr through the Research Explorer Ruhr. They exchange ideas with their hosts at the universities in Bochum, Dortmund and Duisburg-Essen and build up valuable networks.
From 22 June to 5 July 2025, the Research Explorer Ruhr summer program will once again bring international early career researchers from various disciplines to the Ruhr metropolis of knowledge. Organized by the Research Academy, the two-week format offers prospective and early postdocs the opportunity to get to know the research landscape of the University Alliance Ruhr - as well as the Ruhr region as an attractive place to live and work. The international guests will also take part in the Global Young Faculty Event on June 30, for which early career researchers of the University Alliance Ruhr can register until June 27.

The Research Academy is welcoming 28 bright minds from 14 countries of origin to the Ruhr region this summer. At Research Explorer Ruhr 2025, international early career researchers will spend two weeks immersed in the German science system, exploring funding landscapes and career paths. The close cooperation with host professors and their working groups at Ruhr University Bochum, TU Dortmund University and the University of Duisburg-Essen creates the best conditions for sustainable collaborations. Ideally, the program will lead to a longer research stay at the University Alliance Ruhr with the help of a successful third-party funding application.

“At the University of Duisburg-Essen, we are delighted to have twice as many international guests this year compared to last year,” says Simon Kresmann, Head of the Graduate Center Plus at the University of Duisburg-Essen. "In total, over 30 professors from the UA Ruhr applied to be hosts. This shows how lively and open our universities are."

A special highlight awaits on June 30, 2025: the Global Young Faculty Event, which is taking place this year at the College for Social Sciences and Humanities in Essen, is all about the opportunities of international mobility in science. Under the motto “Thinking research globally”, renowned academics and early career researchers will discuss how international experiences shape careers - beyond labs and textbook knowledge. The event will be moderated by Dr. Mark Halawa-Sarholz, Academic Managing Director of the College.

  • Keynote: "Academic activities and productivity of mobile academics"
