The Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences in Essen invites outstanding scholars in the humanities, cultural studies, and social sciences to devote six months to their next research project in the Ruhr region. To this end, the new call for applications for the KWI International Fellowship has been published.

The KWI International Fellowships are fully funded scholarships aimed at excellent researchers from all over the world who have completed their doctorates and have up to six years of postdoctoral experience. Project proposals should fit in with the KWI's research agenda. German citizens can only apply if they are currently employed at an international institute. The KWI offers fellows a modern infrastructure, office space, technical support, library services, event and research management, as well as administrative and communications support.

The application deadline for the 13th international cohort of fellows, who will be at the KWI from October 1, 2026, to March 31, 2027, is February 28, 2026.

The call for applications provides more information about the fellowship, expectations of fellows, and the diverse academic environment in which the KWI is embedded.

About the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities (KWI)
The Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities (KWI) in Essen is an interdisciplinary research institute for the humanities and social sciences in the tradition of institutes for advanced study. Located in the Ruhr Area, KWI offers a space for independent and innovative research in the humanities and various opportunities to engage and include the public. Currently, research at KWI focusses on the following areas: science studies, visual literacy, aesthetic practices, constellations of historical impact, dialogues between the cultural and social sciences. It is one of KWI’s main goals to find new ways of linking research questions, concepts, methods and theories of philology, cultural studies and the social sciences. We are dedicated to pursuing our interdisciplinary agenda through international collaboration. An important contribution to our scholarly and political work comes from the Academy in Exile, offering research space to colleagues whose academic freedom is threatened.
