Important voice in Brazil's higher education landscape visits the Ruhr area

From January 12 to 16, Professor Sandra Almeida, President of the Universidad Federal de Minas Gerais in Brazil (UFMG), will be visiting the Ruhr region. Almeida gave the keynote speech on academic freedom at the opening ceremony of the UA Ruhr Liaison Office Latin America. In addition, the UA Ruhr universities signed a memorandum of understanding with the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais during the opening ceremony to establish their strategic partnership. This partnership will now be further developed and strengthened through personal exchanges.
Visits to all three partner universities
As a researcher, Sanda Almeida is interested in feminist literature, among other things, and incorporates the topics of equality and inclusion into her work in higher education policy. She will discuss these and other topics with researchers from the UA Ruhr. Sandra Almeida will also meet with the UA Ruhr university management and gain insights into the work at the NanoEnergyTechnologyCenter and the Center for Nanointegration in Duisburg-Essen, the Institute for Metal Forming and Lightweight Construction in Dortmund, and the RUB Makerspace in Bochum, among others.
Public lecture
What significance does higher education have in Latin America, and Brazil in particular? What challenges does it face? These and other questions will be answered on 15 January 2026 by Professor Sandra Regina Goulart Almeida. She is a renowed expert in Brazil’s higher education landscape and will be speaking from 5 to 7 p.m. at the College for Social Sciences and Humanities in Essen (Lindenallee 39–41). In her lecture entitled “International Cooperation, Inclusion and Democracy in Higher Education in Brazil and Latin America,” Sandra Almeida will explain how international cooperation influences the development of the higher education landscape in Latin America. A professor of English and Comparative Literatures, Sandra Goulart Almeida looks back on a career of longstanding commitment to promoting academic excellence and global engagement: following her tenure as Dean for International Affairs, she served as Vice President of her university from 2014 to 2018. She also coordinates the Commission for International Relations of the Association of Federal University Presidents (ANDIFES) and advises the state funding agency FAPEMIG as a member of its Board of Trustees. She also represents UFMG in the World University Network (WUN).
