About us

The UA Ruhr universities have joined forces in order to boost their capacity and performance by bundling their competencies and strengths. Their corporate philosophy is to balance competition and collaboration in a manner that benefits all members.

About us

UA Ruhr initiates a wealth of collaborations among universities in the fields of research, academia and administration with the aim of cultivating, promoting and strengthening the economic region Ruhr. Its bottom-up approach has proved successful, as the UA Ruhr has emerged and grown organically following concrete projects performed in individual disciplines and faculties.

This is why the UA Ruhr has succeeded in recruiting an increasing number of institutions at its universities for its collaborative endeavor and in promoting the idea of the University Alliance among its members. An inter-university culture of collaboration linked together by complex structural ties has thus emerged.

During the last 10 years, the UA Ruhr cultivated and exploited the interdisciplinary advantages of its geographical vicinity to the large universities of the Ruhr Area and their academic diversity and to expand the alliance in an ongoing process. Its strategic goal is still to establish UA Ruhr as a center of excellence in the national and international scientific marketplace.

On the occasion of the 10th anniversary, a new Framework Cooperation Agreement was signed.

Our shared vision is to foster research and scholarship within our network of academic excellence and to promote the transformation of the entire Ruhr Area into one of the leading science, research and cultural locations worldwide.

A short videoclip about UA Ruhr and and the Ruhr Area was produced by the European Congress of Sports Science 2017 team.

About the Metropolis Ruhr

From mines and furnaces to state-of-the-art technology and an extensive cultural landscape: old industrial sites and mines have been transformed into modern, exciting venues that house a wealth of cultural events and recreational activities. With more than five million inhabitants from over 200 countries, the Ruhr Area is the largest urban agglomeration in Germany, and its face is shaped by dozens of towns and cities that have maintained their unique character.

The Ruhr Area boasts more than 120 theaters, 100 concert halls, and 200 museums. The destinations are connected via an excellent infrastructure network, comprised of public transport, waterways, and the famous German Autobahnen. Visitors, tourists and locals alike can thus explore national parks and riverside landscapes, as well as former industrial sites that have been converted into nightclubs, swimming and diving pools, climbing areas, design museums, and many more.
